A Change Is Coming

I'm very happy to announce that the Cosmic Fry Up will now be changing both Name & Station (not to mention language). Yes in the next couple of weeks the show will be broadcasted bi-weekly on Berlin's BLN.fm and will be called Quantum Bleep (in reference to both the time traveling selection and my stolen DJ name), in a shock move I will also be presenting the show in German which should be funny for German listeners, expect much more wonky and wobbly musical adventures and some nice guests too, more details to come ..........

The Big Christmas Update

Ey Up,
I am shit at updating blogs and this beige lazer very well proves it, nonetheless here follows an important (or not so important) update on yours truly…… I am slowly coming out of my paternal retirement, so in the forthcoming months I will be taking some DJ gigs again, for booking enquiries please contact the fine people of the Fat Pigeon Agency, I am also trying to get together a live dub show using both Final Scratch (Yes I know that cool kids use Traktor Scratch) & Ableton cutting up and dubbing out loads of gubbins of mine some other peoples plus some reedits from the house of Calavicci, more on this in the coming months.

On the music front I am still working on the AC album which seems to be coming together nicely, Its got a bit of everything that I like on it with influences ranging from Dub, Jazz, Prog, Hip Hop, Blues and Even a bit of Folk, fear not Electronic fans its all wrapped up into a nice Technoey Dubstepping buttery cob. I’m quite proud of it I’ll posting bits and bobs as and when, so keep checking the Soundcloud!

Finally I’m also doing a remix of a nice deep house tune on Mare Records Robert Maria Wolter’s Deep Morning which you can find here, my version is respectfully dubbed out and elongated, Just recording the percussion then its ready, once more keep checking the cloud of sound.

How do all,
I’ve been getting a few emails of late asking why I (Al Calavicci ) or we (Falk Recordings) Haven’t done anything in a while so I thought I’d whack a lovely update on the old lazer and then we’d be nice and clear innit? So here goes…this year is a bit shaky for me as my partner Mareile and I had a little boy Amon in May so we’ve both been dossing around and enjoying pretending to be children again which is nice.

After the release of Escape Route Pt I we got loads of nice feedback which was real lovely but we (Falk) never set out to be a ‘real’ label. It was never our intention to put out 400 releases per year. We just wanted to put out tunes that we like when we like and we still do!

So Apart from the Reedits and Radio shows I’ve been working on loads of new stuff in the guise of an Al Calavicci Album, I’ve got somewhere in the region of 12 tracks going which are a little bit of everything some Techno, some slow Dubby Psyche stuff, lots of acoustic guitar subs bongos and that. Then I’m working on a Dethyr album which is all slow film and folk music inspired gubbins and finally I have some involvement with the Boolean Orchestra which is a disco/deep house project based on small town life you can listen to some of the roughs here.

So there you go I’m working honest ma I promise.

My new Radio show the Cosmic Fry Up will be up and ready for listening soon (thanks to Beard 45 for the suitibly cosmic flyer). Heres the press release from Fat Pigeon Zentrum ....

Integral to British cuisine is the 'Fry Up'. Otherwise known as the 'Fried Breakfast' or 'English Breakfast' this behemoth of the foodiverse is an almost feng shui like balance of Fat, Fat, Protein, More Fat, Cholesterol and a little bit more fat.
Most would agree (vegetarians excluded) that removing the sausages or bacon from your fry up will leave you with nothing more than a dry an empty experience.

With much the same logic reclusive DJ/Producer and all round sad beardy, pysche loving music nerd Al Calavicci would argue that no Techno collection is complete without a head-nod to Delia Derbyshire or Can, No Good Hip Hop is worth listening to without first considering Sun Ra or James Last and most definitely one should never listen to Jungle, Dubstep or Drum & Bass without hours of deep focus on King Tubby, Billy Cobham or Yellowman.

In short the Cosmic Fry-Up is a salty melange of Underground music past and present stopping off at Afro Rock Krautrock, Free Jazz, Dubstep, Psychedelia, Hip Hop, Old Skool Hardcore, House, Techno, Dub, Soul and all that's in between presented and put together lovingly by a man with a beard and an extensive music collection. The show will also feature guest mixes from other artists highlighting their musical inspirations as well their DJ Styles.

I am however working on a few remixes and reedits of some of my favourite artists ready for my triumphant return to the dj-o-sphere (phaarp). These will probably never be released and so far the victims include Jon Carpenter, ESG, Fleet Foxes, Pigbag and this nasty slab of Death House, my refit of Silver Apples - Oscillations; as yet unfinished but you get the idea.

Wendy & Bonnie - Genesis (Review)

I’ve been meaning to write a review of this album for ages, but I just never seem to get round to it. Wendy & Bonnie’s Genesis was originally released in 1969 but unfortunately due to the label going bust very few people ever heard it. Fortunately though it was re-released by sundazed a while back and it’s incredible. Genesis is not just another Psychedelic Folk album its a masterpiece, teeming with the kind of serene ideology that you would expect from San-Franciscan flower power but with some darker undertones thrown in for good measure.

The album kicks of with the slightly kitsch beat stomp of ‘Let Yourself Go Another Time’ with some serious Hammond business and the line “Things would be so simple if everyone felt our way” …. great stuff.

I really cant say enough good about this record so I’m just going to run down what the stand-out tracks are for me.

‘The Paisley Window Pane’ is a Hippy Folk masterpiece where soft ever-changing basslines lull sweetly underneath lush guitar picks and heavily reverbed vocal harmonies.

Every Super Furry Animals Fan will recognise ‘By The Sea’, which to my mind is one of the best Folk records ever created. Not being much of a city person (but living in Berlin) this seminal moment on Genesis ranks alongside Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Happening Brother’ for great Cityworld Escape tunes.

‘5 O’clock In The Morning’ is an amazing track with amazing production and some serious intricacies and dis-chords which wouldn’t seem out of place on a Four:Tet tune.

Directly following is ‘Endless Pathway’ which starts with a rolling bassline that Manu Di Bango would be jealous of before turning into more soft Folky loveliness.

And finally there’s ‘Conventional Man’ (a demo version on the re-release). ‘Conventional Man’ is definitely one of the best tracks on the album, steeped in genius-like simplicity its a song a bloke who most likely would have been referred to as a ’square’ in 60’s road movies whose wife eventually leaves him in order to top herself (this is where the darker undertones kick). Nonetheless sung incredibly sweetly and with incredible beauty by the then 17 yr old Wendy and 13yr Old Bonnie Flower.

Oh The Shame

I’ve always been a relatively patriotic individual and can honestly say that I love Britain. But it seems that my patriotism was sorely misplaced.

You see the reason for which I’ve always loved Britain is my strong belief that we are (were) the only nation that got integration right. That we are (were) a nation of real mongrels; A Hotpot style combo of White, Black and Asian British people. A nation where the relevancy of Musicians such as The Beat, The Specials, Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney or even Dizzee Rascal never comes into question. A place where Reggae, Ska, Northern Soul, Jungle and Garage have become genuinely relevant forms of music and are ingrained into our cultural background regardless of our roots, we as a nation should be proud of that type of Heritage .

I have lived in Berlin for over a year now and I have never missed Britain so sorely. Berlin is a nice place don’t get me wrong its just that when you live in a place where the local idea of integration is partial segregation between quarters and a constant reference to things being ‘exotic’ you miss the normality of Britain (or at least as it is in my head).

So now I while I sit here and lament leaving Britain am I correct in doing so or is all that I believed some sort of naive fantasy that I’ve created. In all honesty I don’t think it is but if the British people see fit to elect two members of the British Nationalist Party to the European Parliament as representatives of my country I guess I have to think again. I am genuinely ashamed to be British today.

A Shit Way To Play

I’ve just had the news from a mate of mine (for the sake of this we’ll call him Captain Willy) that the BMW run Mini plant in Oxford just sacked him and 850 odd of his co-workers. Captain Willy and the others (unfortunately for them) were employed by an agency which means that a cull of this magnitude has next to no repercussions for BMW. As if to add insult to injury the company saw fit to deliver only an hours warning of the sackings; in fact making the entire shift work the duration and then pulling them into a meeting at the end of the day in order to be told by the union about their fate.

I say union in the loosest sense as I was under the impression that a union represented its members but in this case it seems they only represented their own interests claiming unbelievably that they had known about it for three weeks before but they were concerned for their own jobs. So now 850 people in Oxford are seeking new employment in a time of recession i’m sure a little bit of warning would have been helpful.
